How We Make Natural Perfume: From Farm-Grown Botanicals to Fragrance

Behind the scenes at Rose & Co. Botanicals, Shoalhaven, Australia.

Every fragrance has a beginning. For us, that beginning is often found in the garden, where heritage roses unfold with the seasons, aromatic leaves release their scent beneath our fingers, and the natural world provides an endless source of inspiration.

At Rose & Co. Botanicals, creating natural perfume is a deeply personal process. We grow and harvest selected botanicals on our Australian property, distil precious plant materials and carefully compose fragrances using a combination of our own botanical extracts and exquisite natural ingredients sourced from specialist growers around the world.

It is a process guided by nature, curiosity and a love of beautiful scent.

1. Grown — Where It All Begins

Our farm in the Shoalhaven region of New South Wales is home to a growing collection of aromatic botanicals. Among them are heritage roses, including the beautifully fragrant Ispahan and Kazanlik varieties, alongside lavender, rose geranium, patchouli, citrus and other plants chosen for their aromatic character.

Growing our own botanicals gives us something particularly special: the opportunity to know these plants beyond their essential oils and extracts.

We observe how they grow, how they respond to the seasons and how their fragrances change as they flower, mature and develop.

These observations inform our understanding of the botanical materials we work with and inspire the fragrances we create.

2. Harvested — Gathering Nature's Fragrance

Harvesting is one of the most rewarding parts of our work.

Roses are gathered  in October when their blooms are ready, while aromatic herbs and foliage are harvested according to their growth and the requirements of the material.

There is something wonderfully grounding about carrying a basket of freshly picked botanicals from the garden.

The fragrance of a living rose is remarkably complex. Its delicate sweetness, fresh green facets and subtle variations are reminders that nature rarely creates anything one-dimensional.

Working directly with these plants deepens our appreciation of the ingredients used in natural perfumery.

And because our harvests are seasonal, the process is never entirely the same twice.

3. Distilled — Capturing the Botanical Essence

One of the most fascinating transformations takes place in our botanical distillery.

Using our copper still and harvested rainwater, we gently steam-distil selected plant materials to capture their aromatic constituents.

As steam moves through the botanicals, it carries volatile aromatic compounds into the condenser, where the vapour cools and returns to liquid.

The resulting distillate contains fragrant hydrosol, sometimes accompanied by a small quantity of essential oil, depending on the plant and its oil yield.

These delicate aromatic waters and oils are among the ingredients we produce on our farm.

Distillation requires patience, careful observation and an understanding of the materials being processed. Temperature, plant condition and the duration of distillation can all influence the final result.

For us, it is where botanical growing meets practical science.

4. Composed — From Botanical Essence to Perfume. How we make natural perfume.

Not every aromatic ingredient can be grown or produced on our farm, nor would we want to limit our creative palette to those that can.

Alongside our own botanical materials, we seek out beautiful essential oils, absolutes, resins and other natural aromatic extracts from specialist producers around the world.

Each material contributes something different to a composition.

Citrus oils may introduce brightness and freshness. Floral absolutes bring depth and complexity, while woods, roots and resins provide warmth, texture and longevity.

Creating a perfume involves exploring these relationships, considering top, heart and base notes, and making countless small adjustments until the composition feels balanced.

Using fragrance blotters, glassware and carefully recorded formulas, we evaluate and refine our work before preparing our finished alcohol-based perfumes.

Some fragrances come together intuitively. Others require considerable experimentation.

It is a meeting of botanical knowledge, creative expression and the fascinating chemistry of scent.

From Our Farm, With Love

Our approach is not about claiming that every ingredient in every bottle comes from our farm.

It is about maintaining a meaningful connection with the natural world, understanding the materials we use and being thoughtful about where they come from.

Growing, harvesting and distilling botanicals gives us an appreciation for the work involved in producing even the smallest quantity of a precious aromatic extract.

It is this appreciation that informs the fragrances and skincare we create at Rose & Co.

Some we grow. Some we seek out. Every fragrance is composed with intention.

From Earth, with love.
